Benefits of Hands-On Learning

Hands on Learning

How do you keep kids engaged, encourage them to remember what they’ve learned and promote a creative classroom environment? Hands-on learning!

Here are some of the benefits of hands-on learning:

Hands-on, brains on

Hands-on learning engages multiple parts of children’s brains—the right brain through visual and spatial activities, and the left brain through analytic and language-based activities.

Long-term memory

When you experience something for yourself, as opposed to memorizing it, you are more likely to remember it for the long term. Hands-on learning creates memorable experiences that stick with children over time.

Real-world applications

Book learning can often seem abstract to children, whereas hands-on learning teaches them how to apply classroom concepts to the real world. For example, studying a textbook that explains how to read a map is often less effective than having children create their own maps of their cities or neighborhoods.

Critical thinking

Hands-on learning encourages children to make decisions about what to do next and evaluate the impact of decisions they have already made. This imparts valuable critical thinking skills that will serve them well through their lives.

Engage different learning styles

By now, you probably know that kids learn in different ways—auditory, visual, kinesthetic, social and tactile. Hands-on learning engages different learning styles. For example, kinesthetic learners get to move around, and social learners get to talk about what they’re doing and explain it to others.
