Tune Out the Screen, Tune in With Your Kids

It might seem impossible to get to all of the checkmarks on your to-do list. As a parent, turning on the TV or bringing out the tablet or video games might not seem like a bad idea to get a few extra minutes to get things done with. Too much screen time, however, takes away those precious moments we get to interact with our children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics panel of expert doctors recently revised their recommendation for screen time. According to Forbes, some of the revised recommendations include:

• Setting your own limits and boundaries when it comes to personal screen time. Being a role model for your child is the single most beneficial way for them to know right from wrong.
• Engage in two-way communication. Children learn best through real interactions. If your child is playing on a tablet, be available to sit and play along with them.
• Consider the content carefully. Not all apps and television programs are appropriate for young children, regardless of what the viewing public thinks. Pay attention to what they are interested in.

Even with the above revisions, it can still be difficult to know exactly how to monitor and limit screen time for young children. The Huffington Post recently shared a few ideas for parents who are looking for advice on how to balance screen time with time to connect and grow your child’s interests and sense of responsibility.

Communication

You basically want to tune out the screen and tune in with your children. As mentioned above, a two-way conversation is critical to the social and emotional development of a child. You can incorporate a conversation into every single part of the day. Simply talking creates a wonderful connection.

Making Family Time Fun

Weekly games nights are a huge hit with kids of all ages. You can go back to the basics with old-fashioned games of checkers, charades, go fish, Connect Four and much more. Games evoke a lot of laughter and carefree fun that is good for both parents and children.

Setting Up Play Dates

You don’t always have to be the one to play with your child, and planning a play date with your child’s friends is a great idea. Learning to interact, problem-solve, share and communicate with other kids is so valuable.

Read Together

Books are one of the best sources of developing your child’s sense of imagination, play skills, creative thinking and fun for your child. Books are always a great way to enrich and enhance your child’s learning with indirect methods, making reading books – an essential learning tool – seem like a leisure activity.

There will still be times that the television, tablet or other electronic device is warranted. However, don’t miss out on the opportunities to re-connect with your child by unplugging for a while.
