Schedule a Playdate

Kids with social issues can have difficulties making plans. Since playdates are an important part of social development, you can help ease the stress by preparing your child for what might happen during a playdate. Take time to sit down with your child before the scheduled date to talk about what uncomfortable situations might occur. Role play these situations and work out solutions. Before the playdate begins, plan a small list of activities that the children can take turns picking. Not only will this reduce stress, but it will teach your son or daughter the importance of compromise.

Teach Empathy

According to Parents.com, you can enhance your child’s social development by teaching empathy. Since many children with underdeveloped social skills do not understand social cues, practice is key. Discuss different scenarios that may occur during a playdate or while at school and ask your child how he or she thinks other people may feel during that situation. This can help them to develop a sense of mutual respect for others and be more considerate while playing or talking with his or her peers.

Practice Social Communication

When faced with a social situation, some children have trouble understanding the “dos” and “don’ts.” Take time to practice starting a conversation, getting someone’s attention, taking turns and joining a play group. You can also explain the importance of leaving personal space to make someone feel comfortable. Reinforcing what you child experiences during the day with extra support at home will make each day a little easier for your child.
